Rio Grande do Sul ranks fifth among the most populated Brazilian states

According to data of the Population Census of 2010, the total population of Rio Grande do Sul is 10.755.799 inhabitants. The State ranks fifth among the most populated Brazilian states, after São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.

Its mostly populated municipalities are mainly located in Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region (RMPA), Metropolitan Region of Serra Gaúcha and Sul Urban Agglomeration.

The population distribution shows marked tendency to concentration in urban areas. In the State 9,100,291 inhabitants, or 85.1% of the population, were living in urban areas in 2010.

Concerning population variation, especially in recent decades, there is a decline in growth rates. Rio Grande do Sul presented, in the period 2000-2010, the lowest relative growth rate in Brazil.
