Age Pyramids and Population Ageing

RS has the highest Ageing Index of Brazil

Population pyramids represent the age structure by sex and reflect the evolution of the fertility rate, life expectancy and migrations, whereas Ageing Index shows the proportion of youth and elderly in a population.

In recent decades the decline in fertility in the State marked the beginning of the ageing process of the population which, added to the increase in life expectancy, modified the state age pyramid. In the 1970s, Rio Grande do Sul had an age distribution with 39% of the population from zero to 14 years, 55.2% from 15 to 59 years and 5.8% above 60 years. In 2010, there were 1,459,597 people older than 60 years, representing 13.6% of the state population. Considering the present age pyramid, it is also important to emphasize the high proportion of the state population in working age, from 15 to 59 years of age, and the higher proportion of women in the higher age groups.

The Ageing Index of the population* of Rio Grande do Sul in 1970 was 14.8, i.e., for each 100 inhabitants with ages lower than 14 years, there were 14.8 inhabitants older than 60 years. In 2010 such Index reached 65.4, i.e., for each 100 inhabitants younger than 14 years, there were 65.4 inhabitants older than 60 years of age, the highest of Brazil.

Among the COREDEs (Regional Councils of Development), it calls the attention the higher Ageing Index in the north and center of the State, with highlight for COREDEs Fronteira Noroeste, Norte and Nordeste, and Vale do Taquari, Jacuí Centro and Vale do Jaguari.
