Employment and income

Rio Grande do Sul has the 5th highest per capita income among Brazilian states

From 2010 to 2015, the number of jobs in Brazil increased at rates ranging between 1.3% to 6.9% p.a. Among the states,employments rates ranged between 3.7 and 22.9% between 2010 and 2015, according to the RAIS – Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (Annual Report on Social Information) of the Ministry of Labor and Employment. Rio Grande do Sul presented  a rate of variation of employment in the period of the order of 7.18%. 

In the period from 2010 to 2015, the participation of the employees in Rio Grande do Sul in the total of Brazil ranged from 5.6 to 6.3%, according to RAIS. In 2015 RS registered a 6%. In Rio Grande do Sul, a significant part of the employed persons is concentrated in Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region and in the surroundings of Caxias do Sul. Some regional centers also stand out, as Lajeado, Erechim, Passo Fundo, Santa Maria, Santa Cruz do Sul, Pelotas and Rio Grande.

Regarding average per capita monthly income, it may be noted the concentration of higher figures along the expanded axis Porto Alegre-Caxias do Sul, towards Passo Fundo, and in the proximities of Santa Maria, Ijuí and Não-Me-Toque.

According to the Atlas of Human Development of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) of UNO, Rio Grande do Sul stands out among the Federation Units as the fifth Brazilian state with the highest average per capita monthly income in the year 2010, with an amount of R$ 959.24. Concerning the average salary* for December 2015, according to RAIS, the State was in the sixth position among the Federation Units, with a figure of R$2,479.21.
