Garbage Collection

RS ranks 6th among the states that have the highest rates of provision of garbage collection

PAHO – Pan American Health Organization – states that solid waste issue, in the majority of the countries, increases with population growth and its concentration in urban areas, as well as with industrial development and changes of consumption habits. Economic development of any given region is invariably accompanied by an increasing production of solid waste, thus originating the need for elaboration of public policies and technical solutions adequate for solving the issues of management and final disposal, since the lack of them is one of the causes for the proliferation of vector-borne diseases and degradation of the quality of soil, waters and air.

According to the dada from the Population Census 2010, in Brazil, 50,106,088 out of the 57,324,162 households are served by garbage collection system, by truck or container, considered as the most adequate ones, reaching a percentage of 87.41%. Among Brazilian states these percentages vary between 55.83% and 98.23%. Rio Grande do Sul ranks 6thamong the states that have the highest rates of provision of this service.

In Rio Grande do Sul, 3,314,425 out of the 3,599,604 households have garbage collection system, by truck or container, corresponding to 92.08%, a supply rate above the Brazilian one. Among the 496 municipalities of the RS, 154 present supply percentages equal or above the one of the State, reaching even 99.88%, as is the case of Dois Irmãos municipality.

On the other hand, it is important emphasizing that, among the methods of garbage disposal, there are still practices considered inadequate as: burning or burial in the property; dumping on wasteland or street; and littering on river, lake, sea or other destination.
