Human Development Index - HDI and MHDI

MHDI of RS went from 0.542 in 1991 – low development – to 0.746 in 2010 – high development

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a general and synthetic measure used to classify the degree of economic development and quality of life of countries. It was created in 1990 and has been published annually, since 1993, by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) of ONU. HDI varies on a scale from zero (no human development) to 1 (total human development).

At present, the three dimensions that form HDI are:

Health: Healthy and long life (measured by life expectancy)

Education: Access to knowledge (Calculated using the average of schooling of adults and expected years of schooling for children at the age of starting school life)

Income: Life standard (measured by the per capita Gross Domestic Income)

The global Brazilian HDI for 2013 was 0.744, the 79th position in the world ranking among the 187 countries and territories recognized by the UN.

This index is also used to measure the development of cities, states and regions. In Brazil it is used through the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI).

MHDI is a methodological adjustment to the global HDI; therefore, it is not possible to make a comparison between the MHDI of a municipality and the HDI of a country.

MHDI was first published in 1998 (from data of the Population Censuses of 1970, 1980 and 1991).

The most recent information are available in the Atlas of Human Development in Brazil – 2013 (from the data of the Censuses of 1991, 2000 and 2010).

The Total MHDI of Rio Grande do Sul evolved, from 1991 to 2010, from 0.542 – low development to 0.746 – high development, according to the levels of Municipal Human Development *.
