Internet, Fixed and Mobile Telephony

The number of accesses to mobile broadband internet in RS is almost equal to the number of inhabitants

Rio Grande do Sul is one of the Brazilian states with the largest number of households with access to internet, and fixed and mobile telephony. According to the Population Census 2010, Rio Grande do Sul ranked sixth among Brazilian states, with 1,219,879 households with access to the internet, what corresponded to approximately 40% of the total of households. Data from the Census 2010 also showed that access to internet services was greater along the axis Porto Alegre-Caxias do Sul-Passo Fundo, in the Regional Councils of Development Metropolitano Delta do Jacuí, Serra and Produção, as well as in COREDE Central. According to data from May, 2018 from MCTIC - Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication), at present the number of fixed broadband internet connections reaches 6% of the Brazilian total, and of mobile broadband ones reaches 5.6% of the total in Brazil, whereas 420 municipalities in RS have Broadband 3G Mobile Internet coverage.

With respect to the number of households with access to fixed telephony, Rio Grande do Sul ranked 7th among Brazilian states in 2010, with 39.34% of the total number of households with access, what represented 1,415,981 households. Data from the Population Census 2010 showed that access to fixed telephony was greater in COREDEs Metropolitano Delta do Jacuí, Serra, Vale do Rio dos Sinos, Produção and Central. According to MCTIC (May 2018), currently the number of fixed phones in service in RS corresponds to 6% of the total of Brazil.

Concerning mobile cellular telephony, RS was in second place in 2010 among Brazilian states, with 90.70% of the households with access to the service, in a total of 3,264,299 households. Data from the 2010 Census also showed that access to mobile telephone service was greater in COREDEs Sinos Valley, Paranhana Encosta da Serra and Litoral. According to MCTIC (May 2018), at present the number of mobile accesses in RS is higher than the number of inhabitants, as in Brazil.
