Life expectancy is an important indicator of the socioeconomic and environmental conditions, as well as of the level of health quality of a certain country or region, since it is closely related to access to the local health system and its adequacy in meeting the needs of the population. It also reflects recent transformations of demographic behavior and of social indicators, as the sharp decrease in fertility and mortality that result in the increasing demand for health facilities and services related to population ageing.
According to Atlas do Desenvolvimento Humano no Brasil (UNDP - Unided Nations Development Programme /Brazil), life expectancy at birth for both sexes in Rio Grande do Sul was higher than in Brazil on 1991; 2000 and 2010. Among the 27 federation units, Rio Grande do Sul was in 2010, the fourth state with the highest life expectancy in Brazil, surpassed by the Federal District, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.
According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) life expectancy at birth in RS for both sexes went from 72,4 anos on 2000 to 77,8 anos on 2016. Studies of demographic evolution show that the demographic transition began earlier in RS in relation to the most of brazilian states and became more evident in the last decades. It is characterized by the rapid absolute and relative increase in adult and elderly population age groups. Regarding sex, these differences are still more evident when it is noticed the higher life expectancy at birth of women, that at 2016 reached 81,1 years, while the one of men was only 74,3 years. As a result, the number of women is higher than the one of men, mainly in the more advanced age groups.
