Literacy

RS is among the five states with the highest illiteracy rates in the Country

According to IBGE, literate is a person who knows how to read and write a simple ticket in the language that knows. Rio Grande do Sul is among the five states in the Country with the highest l literacy rate inn the country. In 2010 it reached a literacy rate of the population above 15 years of 95.5%. The State also has one of the highest percentages of adult population with complete fundamental, secondary or superior education, always ranking among the top ten positions.

The level of instruction of the state population occupies a privileged position in comparison with the other Brazilian states, although significant regional differences are noted. For instance, while the municipality of Feliz, located in COREDE Vale do Caí, has, in 2010, an illiteracy rate lower than 1%, Lagoão, located in COREDE Alto da Serra do Botucaraí, has a rate of 20%.

Concerning another indicator, schooling rate¹, that identifies the percentage of the population that is enrolled in the level of education adequate to the age group, the State has also showed variations over the last two decades. In Secondary School there was a significant improvement. The rate jumped from 20.6% in 1980 to 64.1% in 2016. Whereas in Fundamental Education this figure went from 87.2% in 1980, to 96.4% in 2016².
