Roadways

RS has approximantly 17,000 km of roadways under federal and state jurisdiction

The road system is responsible for the transport of most of the cargo and almost all of the passengers in Rio Grande do Sul. According to DAER – Departamento Autônomo de Estadas de Rodagem (Autonomous Department of Roads), the State has approximately 17,000 km of roads under federal and state jurisdiction, besides the municipal network. The federal network structures the transport system of the State with longitudinal, diagonal, transversal and linking roads. The state network is linked to the federal one, being denser and more divided in north and northeast regions of the State due to the greater number of municipalities and urban nuclei.

According DAER, data from April, 2017, the paved road network of the State has approximately 12,600 km, out of these, around 5,000 km correspond to federal roads and 6,800 km correspond to state ones. It also has approximately 3,800 km of federal and state unpaved roads, out of which 1,300 km are undergoing paving works.

Concerning the fleet of motor vehicles, there is a continuous and sharpincrease in the number of registrations of vehicles in use in Rio Grande do Sul, requiring increasing investments in road infrastructure and planning in the area of urban mobility. According to DETRAN – Departamento Estadual de Trânsito (State Traffic Department), data from April, 2017, the State has a fleet of approximately 6,450,000 motor vehicles*.
