Water Supply

RS ranks 6th among those that present the highest indexes of water supply

According to FUNASA – Fundação Nacional de Saúde (National Health Foundation), environmental sanitation comprises the set of actions, works and services considered as priorities in public health programs. It comprises water supply, care for the disposal of solid waste and sewage, improvements on household sanitation, urban drainage, control of vectors and focuses of transmissible diseases.

The themes of water supply, household sewage and garbage collection are important indicators of environmental conditions and life quality of the population of a region. The lack of these services is one of the most serious socio-environmental problems to be eradicated in Brazil. The universalization of these services must be a governmental goal, and actions should be focused mainly in the periphery of urban centers and rural areas.

According to the Population Census of 2010, in Brazil, 47,494,025 out of 57,324,167 households are connected to public water supply network, reaching 82.85%. Among the Brazilian federation units, the percentages vary from 38.50% (Rondônia) to 95.11% (Distrito Federal). Rio Grande do Sul ranks 6th among those that present the highest indexes of water supply. In RS, 3,071,715 households, out of the total of 3,599,604, are connected to the general network, corresponding to 85.33%, a supply rate above the Brazilian one. Among the 496 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul, 178 have service percentages equal or above to those of the State, reaching up to 99.35% coverage of this service, as is the case of Porto Alegre municipality.
